Fillings
Fillings
A filling repairs a tooth that has been damaged by decay, so it can work and feel like a healthy tooth again. At iSmile Dental Team in Philadelphia, fillings are one of the services we offer to help protect your teeth from further damage.
What a Filling Does
When bacteria break down the surface of a tooth, they create a small hole called a cavity. Left alone, a cavity can grow deeper and reach the sensitive inner part of the tooth. A filling removes the decayed area and replaces it with a durable material that seals the space and restores the tooth's shape.
When People Seek a Filling
Some cavities cause no symptoms at first, which is why regular checkups matter. Many are found during a dental exam or on X-rays. Others show up as signs that prompt a visit:
- Sensitivity — a twinge when eating or drinking something hot, cold, or sweet.
- Visible pits or dark spots — changes on the surface of a tooth.
- Toothache — pain when biting or discomfort that lingers.
- Chipped or worn teeth — small breaks that can also be repaired with a filling.
Keeping Your Teeth Healthy
Brushing twice a day, cleaning between your teeth, and limiting sugary snacks and drinks all help prevent new cavities. Routine exams, teeth cleanings, and dental X-rays also help catch problems while they are small. If you think you may need a filling, contact our team to talk about your next step.
